CPJ engine: Media freedom organization calls on UEFA EUROAfghan authorities to protect the safety of journalists Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, the country's journalism industry has been facing unprecedented challenges. Many journalists have been threatened and retaliated for relevant reports or cooperation with foreign media, and some of them have even been violently attacked and attacked. The increasingly serious suppression of media freedom has aroused the concern of the international community. As an independent non-profit organization, the Commission on Non-Profit Organizations (CPJ) has always been committed to protecting journalists around the world from threats, attacks, imprisonment and executions. However, the current difficulties of the situation in Afghanistan are not only faced by the local mediaThreats, as well as global concerns, especially for journalists working in Afghanistan. With the rise of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the suppression of media freedom has become more and more serious. Many journalists were asked by the Taliban to stop reporting. It is reported that within a few days after the takeover, several media outlets such as Tolonews, Ariana News and Pajhwok received messages asking them to stop reporting the news. Shabnam Khan Dawran, editor of Afghan Youth Television (AYTV), pointed out that the station's personnel received unclear information about the new rules of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and they concluded that the best thing to do was to stop all news reports immediately. As a result of this pressure, many journalists can only solve problems by reducing reports, deleting information or fleeing the country.However, these actions will cause great damage to Afghanistan's media freedom and the press industry. In addition, there are terrible situations in which journalists are beaten, detained, executed or killed under attacks by opposition forces. The tragedy continues. Take Mohammad Aliyas Dayee as an example, a reporter of Deutsche Press Radio was found killed at home in November 2021, indicating a serious deterioration of press freedom and security in Asia in recent years. He died several days ago when he was found, and his face was cut when he was found. It is reported that his relatives have been threatened by the Taliban. In response to these incidents, CPJ called on the Afghan authorities to take urgent action to protect the right to freedom of the press. This includes ensuring that journalists can safely perform their duties without any form of force, threat or retaliation.In addition, the proceedings should be fair and transparent to ensure that those who violate the freedom of the press are properly punished and sanctioned. However, these appeals have not been effectively responded to. This shows that the challenges facing Afghanistan are not only local threats and suppressions, but also the growing attention and concerns in the international community. This may lead other countries and organizations to take action to protect the freedom of threatened journalists and the media. In this case, CPJ must continue to play its role globally, support threatened journalists, raise public awareness of the issue of freedom of the press, and promote a more open and free Afghanistan. In a word, the Afghan press faces extremely high threats and risks, and urgent action is needed to safeguard the freedom of the press and protect the safety of journalists. As an international media freedom organization, CPJ must continue to play a role in promoting the international community to pay attention to the current situation of media freedom in Afghanistan and taking measures to protect threatened institutions and practitioners. Only in this way can we ensure that the freedom of the press in Afghanistan can exist for a long time and continue to develop.
